As an architect, I am drawn to edges—the line of how a building meets the sky and the ground, the shadow pattern on a wall, the framed view through a window that separates inside and out. I love how buildings create places by defining and clarifying the ‘space between’. Buildings shape our experience of the physical world around us while simultaneously separating us from a direct connection with nature; the tension between these opposing viewpoints underpins my work. I ask myself: what is beyond this wall, around the corner, through the door…
Working in watercolor and pastel, I describe the unique qualities of a place, by exploring line, shape and the space between. Through my choices in color and composition I edit what I experience to capture an imprint of the moment. I paint to remember the changing light and shadow, the texture of materials revealed in sunlight, the sounds of the city and the birds, and the emotional quality of the space around me.
